A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped after traveling to the Lalmai Hills in Cumilla. Police have arrested a young man named Sakib (22) in connection with the allegation made against the victim's boyfriend and four of his friends. He was arrested on Sunday afternoon from the Lalmai Hills area of Sadar Dakshin Upazila in the district. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, Rakibul Islam, confirmed the matter. The arrestee, Sakib, is the son of Shahid Miah, residing in the Ujirpur area under Kalir Bazar Union of Adarsha Sadar Upazila.
According to police and information provided by the victim, the teenager left home on Saturday afternoon after receiving a phone call from her boyfriend. After reaching the Dharmasagar area of Cumilla city from her home in Chandina Upazila, her boyfriend, Siam, picked her up on a motorcycle on the pretext of visiting Kotbari. From there, she was taken to a secluded spot in the Sadhermura area of Lalmai Hills in Sadar Dakshin Upazila.
Several of Siam's friends were already present at that isolated spot in the hills. As evening fell, the accused intimidated the teenager in various ways. Siam and his associates then assaulted her throughout the night.
The following day, Sunday morning, the incident came to light, prompting local residents to step in. With the victim's assistance, they detained the accused Sakib and dialed the national emergency service number 999. Upon receiving the news, a police team from the Cantonment Police Outpost and the local police station rushed to the scene, rescued the girl, and took Sakib into custody.
In connection with this incident, the victim's father filed a case naming five individuals, with Siam as the primary accused. The teenager has been admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Center at Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a medical examination. Based on information obtained from the arrested Sakib, police are conducting drives in various locations to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the crime.
