Across the vast fields of Chandina Upazila in Comilla, rows of lush, vibrant vegetables now flourish. With the new season approaching, local farmers are busy cultivating early winter vegetables. There is a particularly strong interest in growing cauliflower and tomatoes this year. The fields, stretching toward the horizon, are adorned with the green foliage of cauliflower and the captivating sight of tomato plants. Thanks to favorable weather conditions and diligent care, farmers in the region are anticipating a bumper harvest and substantial profits.A tour of various unions in the Upazila reveals that farmers are diversifying their crops rather than relying on a single variety. Many have begun cultivating both cauliflower and tomatoes simultaneously. Driven by the prospect of securing better prices by bringing early-season produce to market, they are working tirelessly. From dawn until dusk, Chandina’s farmers can be found tending to their fields—irrigating, weeding, and managing pests. The scene in Mehar village is equally encouraging. Shahjalal, a hardworking farmer from the village, has planted cauliflower on 30 decimals of his land. Through proper care and consistent maintenance since the seedlings were planted, the plants have grown robust and healthy. Although the harvest has not yet begun, the healthy state of the plants suggests that the cauliflower will soon be ready for the market. Shahjalal is optimistic that the early arrival of fresh cauliflower will meet strong demand and fetch a good price.Jamal Uddin, another successful farmer from the same village, is also making great strides; he has cultivated tomatoes on 30 decimals of his land. The condition of his tomato fields is currently very promising. The lush foliage and diligent care of the plants have created a promising outlook across the fields. In the broader context of the upazila, those who began cultivating tomatoes earlier than Jamal Uddin have seen even more advanced progress; their plants are already bearing a mix of green and ripe tomatoes, which are being sold to local buyers at good prices.Meanwhile, in areas where tomato seedlings were planted somewhat later, the plants—though not yet yielding fruit—are covered in an abundance of yellow blossoms. This profusion of flowers suggests that, before long, the fields will be filled with red and green tomatoes. These farmers, too, remain optimistic; they continue to provide regular care to ensure the health of their crops. They are hopeful that when their harvest reaches the market—following that of the earlier growers—the demand for vegetables will remain strong, allowing them to secure a fair price.Overall, the fields of Chandina now reflect the dreams of the local farmers. Engaged in tending, irrigating, and monitoring their crops, the farmers wear expressions of renewed hope. With continued guidance from the local agricultural office and consistent, proper care, these farmers are poised not only to improve their own livelihoods but also to play a significant role in addressing the shortage of early-season vegetables throughout the district. It is widely believed that these positive outcomes, born of hard work, will add a new dimension to the economic landscape of Chandina.
