The Rajshahi University (RU) campus remains closed following the recent incident of a teacher being assaulted. In this situation, Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir, the vice-presidential candidate backed by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing), has demanded that the upcoming RAKSU election be postponed. He has urged that the election be held after the Durga Puja festival.
On Monday (September 22), he made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists.
Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir said, “With the ongoing debate over the quota issue and the complete shutdown enforced by teachers, officials, and staff, there are hardly any students present on campus. Most students have already gone home. In such a situation, it will not be possible to hold the RAKSU election on September 25 in a fair and democratic manner. To ensure a festive and acceptable election, we are demanding that it be held after Durga Puja.”
After 35 years, the long-awaited Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RAKSU) election is scheduled to take place on September 25.
Following major setbacks in the DUCSU and JUCSU elections, the Chhatra Dal is putting in all efforts to make a strong comeback through RAKSU. The organization’s leaders and activists have been campaigning energetically employing strategic panel arrangements as well as innovative approaches to attract general students.
It is worth mentioning that on September 7, Chhatra Dal announced a full panel for all 23 posts of RAKSU at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar. The panel has been composed of “persecuted” and “clean-image” leaders and activists, along with figures beyond traditional politics. These include a national team footballer, the goalkeeper of the Rajshahi football team, a first-year student, a band founder, and students who have won the Dean’s Award. Four female candidates, including one contesting for one of the top three posts, are also part of the panel.
