U.S. President Donald Trump is once again facing criticism over allegations of interfering in the Justice Department. Reports say he instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to launch aggressive investigations against his political opponents.
According to the BBC report published on Monday (September 22), Trump has urged the nation’s top law officer to take tougher action against his rivals, prompting Democrats to denounce his behavior as a “march toward dictatorship.”
On Sunday, Trump wrote on social media addressing Bondi: “We can’t wait any longer. This is destroying our reputation and credibility.” Expressing frustration, he claimed “nothing is happening” and then directed Bondi to investigate former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff, who led Trump’s first impeachment trial.
Shortly afterward, Trump praised Bondi in another post, calling her work “tremendous.”
Just a day earlier, on Saturday, Trump said he had reviewed more than 30 statements and posts, adding: “Same old story just talk, no action. Comey, Schiff, Letitia they’re all big criminals, but nothing is happening.”
Democrats sharply criticized Trump’s remarks. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told CNN: “This is the road to dictatorship. The Justice Department has always been powerful and impartial, regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans were in charge. They’ve acted fearlessly against lawbreakers. But the president is turning it into a weapon against his enemies guilty or not.”
When asked about the issue on Sunday, Trump doubled down: “They must be dealt with. And quickly.” He also claimed, “Pam Bondi will be remembered as one of the greatest attorneys general in history.”
The comments came a day after federal prosecutor Eric Seibert resigned. Trump insisted he had fired Seibert because he failed to bring mortgage fraud charges against Letitia James. However, The New York Times reported that Seibert told Justice Department officials there was not enough evidence to indict her. James dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and “politically motivated.” She previously won a fraud lawsuit against Trump in 2023.
On Saturday, Trump said: “I fired him. There’s a great case here many lawyers and analysts agree.” He praised Bondi and announced he had nominated a new candidate to replace Seibert, adding: “She (Bondi) is careful, intelligent, and patriotic. But we must appoint my recommended tough prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, in the Eastern District of Virginia to move things forward.”
The BBC noted that since the 1970s, the Justice Department has tried to maintain independence from presidential influence. Trump, however, has repeatedly broken with that tradition. During his first term, he fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and his second attorney general, William Barr, resigned after refusing to back Trump’s false claims of election fraud in 2020.
Trump has also made no secret of his desire to retaliate against political rivals. During campaign rallies, he openly threatened action against several opponents including former President Joe Biden.
