Dhaka University Students Urge BNP to Clarify Position on Fazlur Rahman’s Remarks

Dhaka University Students Urge BNP to Clarify Position on Fazlur Rahman’s Remarks

Dhaka University students have strongly condemned the recent comments made by BNP leader Fazlur Rahman, calling them offensive and derogatory. They have also urged the BNP to clarify its stance on his remarks.

On Sunday evening (September 21), the students staged a human chain at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, protesting Fazlur Rahman’s statement, which they described as discriminatory and insulting.

DUCSU member Raihan Uddin said, “People must consider what could happen if a BNP, represented by Fazlur Rahman, comes to power. The BNP cannot dismiss his remarks as merely personal. The party must make its position clear regarding his comments and address the authoritarian tendencies hiding within its ranks.”

Another DUCSU member, Shahinur Rahman, warned, “It won’t take long to put you on the same path Sheikh Hasina has taken. Do not try to create division.”

Azizul Haque, Vice President of Surya Sen Hall, urged the BNP to arrange psychological treatment for Fazlur Rahman, condemning his offensive comments. The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) also issued a statement denouncing his remarks.

In a press release signed by DUCSU General Secretary S M Forhad on Sunday (September 21), the union demanded that Fazlur Rahman offer an unconditional apology to the students and refrain from making divisive remarks in the future.

The controversy stems from Fazlur Rahman’s recent comments during a television talk show on the DUCSU election. He said:

This is not a DUCSU election. There are almost as many students at Hathazari Madrasa as at Dhaka University. It’s like an election of a senior madrasa. This disaster was created by Sheikh Hasina herself. Madrasa students are passing Alim and getting admitted to Dhaka University in large numbers, while those from schools and colleges are being left behind.
