Mexico Tanker Truck Explosion Kills 25

Mexico Tanker Truck Explosion Kills 25

At least 25 people have been killed in Mexico City after a tanker truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exploded. The incident also left at least 60 others injured.

In a statement on Friday (September 19), Mexico’s Health Ministry confirmed that the explosion occurred the previous day in the busy Iztapalapa district of the capital. The truck, carrying nearly 50,000 liters of LPG, crashed into a roadside barrier. The collision immediately triggered a massive explosion, quickly spreading fire across the area.

The blast was so intense that flames engulfed at least 30 nearby vehicles. Ten people died at the scene, while another 15 succumbed to their injuries in hospitals. Among the injured, 21 remain hospitalized—several in critical condition. A total of 38 patients have been discharged after receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest driver negligence and overspeeding were the main causes of the accident.

This tragedy recalls another devastating incident in January 2019, when a pipeline rupture in Tlahuelilpan, Hidalgo state, led to a massive fire and explosion during a fuel theft attempt, killing 137 people.
