The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has entered a period of serious uncertainty amid growing tension between players and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following demands from players, BCB director M Nazmul Islam is set to be removed from his role as chairman of the board’s finance committee. However, the board has issued a clear warning that the league could be suspended indefinitely if players fail to return to the field within the day.
According to the BCB constitution, a board director can only lose his position under specific circumstances, including death, mental incapacity, disciplinary punishment, financial insolvency, or absence from three consecutive board meetings. None of these conditions apply to Nazmul Islam. As a result, the BCB can only remove him if he voluntarily resigns.
The controversy began last week when Nazmul made a controversial comment regarding former national team captain Tamim Iqbal, which drew strong criticism from the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). The situation escalated further after additional remarks questioning the contributions of cricketers, prompting players to threaten a boycott of matches.
CWAB President Mohammad Mithun said that such comments are unacceptable from a sitting board director. He stressed that no official in a responsible position has the right to speak about players in that manner and called for Nazmul’s immediate resignation.
The Dhaka phase of the Bangladesh Premier League was scheduled to begin on Thursday (January 15). However, due to the ongoing dispute, matches failed to start on time, casting doubt over the continuation of the tournament.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mithun announced a complete boycott of all cricketing activities until Nazmul steps down. He stated that players would only return to the field if the BCB officially commits that Nazmul will no longer remain on the board within the next 48 hours. Otherwise, he added, players will not take responsibility for the suspension of matches if cricket remains halted.
With both sides holding firm positions, the future of the BPL now hangs in the balance.
