Two people, including a BNP leader, were killed in separate lightning strikes in Jessore. The accidents occurred in Basundia of Jessore Sadar Upazila and Sagardattakati villages of Keshabpur Upazila on Wednesday (October 1).
Hakim Sardar (65), who died in Basundia, is the son of Md. Abdur Rob of Kholadanga village. He was the organizing secretary of the 6th ward branch of Basundia Union BNP.
Basundia Union BNP General Secretary Kazi Abdul Aziz said that Hakim was working in his own fish enclosure during the rain around 8:30 am on Wednesday. At that time, lightning suddenly struck. Some people working in the enclosure next to him saw Hakim lying on the ground. At that time, they rushed and rescued him and took him home. However, he died on the spot.
Abul Hasnat, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the matter and said that Hakim Sardar was fishing in his enclosure in the rain at around 9 am. At that time, he was struck by lightning and died on the spot.
Meanwhile, Shamim Hossain (25), who died in the lightning strike in Keshabpur, is the son of Abu Sayeed Sardar of Belkati village.
Local residents said that the incident took place on Wednesday morning while he was working in a fish enclosure in the Amtala area of Sagardattakati village in Panjia union of the upazila. After being injured in the lightning strike, he died on the way to the Upazila Health Complex.
Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Keshabpur Police Station, said that Shamim had been working in a fish enclosure in the area for a long time.
