Chief Advisor Receives Theirworld's Unlock Big Change Award

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus was honored at the annual High-Level Global Education Dinner of the World Foundation for Children held in New York.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of Grameen Bank, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, was honored at the annual High-Level Global Education Dinner of the World Foundation for Children held in New York during the United Nations General Assembly session.

Professor Yunus was presented with the Unlock Big Change Award of the World Foundation for Children at a ceremony held at a New York hotel on Monday. The award was presented in recognition of his pioneering role in education and socio-economic development and his lifelong commitment to human well-being.

The World Foundation, an international charity dedicated to children, works to address the global education crisis and unlock the potential of a new generation.

The event was co-hosted by Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and former UK Prime Minister, and Sarah Brown, Chair of ThatWorld and Executive Chair of the Global Business Coalition for Education. The event highlighted the transformative power of education.

Along with Professor Yunus, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was also honored. However, Yunus's recognition is more significant because of his lifelong struggle to put microcredit and education at the heart of poverty alleviation.

While presenting the award, Gordon Brown said that in the last fifty years, no private sector project has played a more effective role in lifting people out of poverty than the Grameen Bank initiative. He called Professor Yunus a global pioneer.

While accepting the award, Professor Yunus said that credit is a basic human right, like food, healthcare and education. He said, "If the doors of the financial system were open to everyone, there would be no poor people in the world." I have included education in the microcredit package and helped women so that they can send their children to school.’

Professor Yunus highlighted the interrelationship between financial empowerment and education, citing various examples.

He said that many women have taken advantage of microcredit to lift their families out of poverty and provide education to their children.

Questioning the conventional wisdom of education, Professor Yunus said that children need to be taught to develop creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age.

‘A child should learn how to be an entrepreneur,’ he commented.

He also said that universities should teach how to use business as a force for human welfare. ‘Universities should be a place where solutions to human problems are not only encouraged but also expected,’ he added.

Professor Yunus said, ‘Business solutions are possible to all the problems of human society.’
