Former NCP leader Neela Israfil has commented on the New York airport incident as a clear example of the degradation of national politics.
She made this comment in a post on her Facebook account on Tuesday (September 23) morning.
She wrote, ‘What happened at the American airport is not just an accident, it is a naked manifestation of the degradation of our national politics. On foreign soil, in front of the international gaze, the dirty politics that we have been practicing has been revealed again – a naked display of intolerance, violence, and revenge.’
The attempt to attack a woman was the most tragic. A few honest people were saying loudly that a female fellow passenger should not be disrespected. (Apare diona, aktarre de) But still, the chaos that has arisen around women proves the moral bankruptcy of our society and politics. Women have been used as a tool for political revenge, which is very shameful and condemnable.
‘What is more painful here is that a gentle, calm, respected leader like Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, whom I have never personally seen get agitated or angry; he also had to be the victim of this dirty attack. A gentle man, who has always been a symbol of patience, has also been insulted. This is not just an attack on a leader, but on the political consciousness of the entire nation.’
‘And Dr. Yunus, who won the Nobel Peace Prize and brightened the image of Bangladesh all over the world, fled for his own safety. However, he left his female companion, Dr. Zara, unprotected on the road, in the midst of chaos. Leaving a fellow passenger unprotected is not only irresponsible, it is the most heinous failure of leadership.’
Neela Israfil wrote, ‘It is surprising that all the grand photoshoots and social media campaigns during the flight from Bangladesh were mere show. But when faced with real danger during the landing, those same leaders moved to a safer path. The workers and fellow passengers remained in the center of chaos, and the leadership fled under the cover of security. This is the true character of the so-called leadership of Bangladesh.’
‘Today’s incident has made it clear to the nation that a large part of our political leadership is opportunistic, irresponsible and hypocritical. Those who cannot ensure the safety of women in times of trouble, those who can leave their fellow passengers on the road, have lost the moral right to lead.’
‘The most painful truth for me is that even a respected gentleman like Mirza Fakhrul had to be humiliated, and a female fellow passenger was put at extreme risk of dishonor. And a Nobel laureate ran away where he was supposed to come forward and take responsibility. This scene is not only a personal insult, but a shameful chapter for the entire nation.’
Finally, he wrote, ‘Now is the time for the nation to ask, will we forever reject this hypocritical, irresponsible, anti-women political culture, or will we remain silent and push the next generation towards even greater humiliation?’
